Road Trip

Just wanted to share some shots from our latest trip, the ‘before’ and the ‘after’…

So much beauty, by day…

… and by night, so much treachery… The Lexus flies!

Yet the Lord has kept us in life, for His purposes.

We are his people, the sheep of His Hand.  In this we can rest…

The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.  The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Ps.121:7-8 ESV

P.S. The brief account of our frightening Ice Capades is here.   We have arrived safely home now.  Surprisingly the Lexus survived the dive, battered but driveable.  With some temporary repairs to her differential she carried us the last leg home where she will likely have to be retired.

Waiting for worms…

Well, buds may be swelling and bursting into bloom in the house…

But that’s not quite the picture out-of-doors this week…

P1140204

We thought we had come back to Home, Green Home.
But then it started snowing…
and went right on snowing for three days!

That’s unheard of here (at least in our short ten-year history) where some years may not see even an hour of snowfall in town.

But it did make for much happy snow play—for snow forts and happy snowmen at the local park

(I was the only bystander…)P1140222

And the woods are, as Frost would say, ‘lovely, dark and deep’…

P1140229

The huckleberries, not yet in leaf, look like lace filigree…

P1140233

All trails lead to fairyland…

P1140236

And the slopes of Scout only lack daring Olympians…

The rather lovely thing about our snowy days is they are just on the edge of freezing and destined not to last, and they are warm enough to enjoy!

So on the final morning of our wintry wonderland (as predicted by the weathermen) I tromped out early to watch the sun rise to its task.P1140256

Its peachy golden warmthP1140259

made the morning irresistible,

so I walked the length of the street luxuriating in the glory of it…P1140273

Who could not love a shapely tree ‘au naturel’, dressed only in fresh-fallen snow?

P1140263cropP1140277

But this I’d never seen before–a tree bedecked with a host of Turdus migratorius:

P1140267 Surely spring is on the wing.

Here’s living proof:

None other than the common American Robin…

P1140270 Here. Waiting for worms.

I love it!

So I’m glad to wait too..with the brave snowdrops

And the whimsical garden bunny P1140300P1130879snowshoeharenot so camouflaged as his wild Albertan counterpart  (who hides beneath our grandkids’ backstep…)

It’s not so bad to be home, waiting for worms.

Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience…

Rom 8:24-25 ESV

‘Twas the week before Christmas…

And all through the house was the aroma of Christmas baking for the annual party…with of course the requisite contest, this year Gingerbread Tree decorating.  How did we do?

P1090085P1090080

You can try your hand at it with this easy recipe.  Just chill the dough and roll out on a greased cookie sheet with plastic on top… and it’s easy as gingerbread trees!P1090109

Need ‘concrete’ icing? Just whip 3 egg whites, 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar, and 3 3/4 cups icing sugar for 7 min. or so until very stiff.  Keep covered with damp cloth or plastic wrap until ready to use.  Best used fresh.  Makes 2 cups—enough to ‘glue’ on LOTS of candy, permanently!

Well after all that, a relapse was in order, so now we’re laying a little low,  waiting out colds while planning for the kiddn’s to come home with their kiddn’s…

P1090172

We were married the week before Christmas Eve.  So every year, interjected into the flurry of Christmas anticipation comes this celebration of all our years together.  This year we’ve reached 29 and it merited me a lavish bunch of roses…

And to make the occasion extra special we had snow!P1090161

As Rachel and I tromped out to take pictures this morning, we missed the best one as a pair of mallards flew up from our little winter pond, bright against the morning sky…  The only sign they left of their stay was their webprints…

P1090153I can only say I’m glad I’m not a duck, and can come in out of the winter cold and sit by the fire a while… Wish you could join me.
