Splash!

It was magical (as in surprisingly wonderful and unexpected!)–What better way to end a day of pedaling up and down hill and vale than with a refreshing dip into a warm lake to freshen up, followed by an easy ride down a fine bike path in the cool of the dayā€¦into the heart of Victoria, the inner harbor.Ā  We rolled into place, our tandem bars making a handy roost in a standing room only crowd, just minutes before the stirring anthem beganā€¦O CANADA, of course.

We were about to be treated to our first experience of Victoria Symphony SPLASH!, an annual event put on for the people of Victoria, and hapless cyclists passing through!

The custom-composed ā€œInner Harbor Overtureā€ opened the concert utilizing horns of boats big and small throughout the inner harbor.Ā  Delightful!

Day faded slowly into night as the symphony wound its way through classical and popular worksā€”Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Liszt, a John Williams tribute, and Star Wars musicā€”to the grand finale, the 1812 Overture complete with a real live cannon and concluding with spectacular fireworks!

What could be more magical than that?Ā  How about walking back through the throng to an open space, mounting our tandem and pedaling off at high speed into the inky darkness, down a smooth windy trail, (finding ourselves following another tandem stoked by ā€˜old peopleā€™. How likely is that!)Ā  back over the little wood harbor bridgeā€¦and back to our waiting vehicle (after a little detour, a little getting lost trying to find the right street, a little of the less ā€˜magicalā€™ nitty-gritty of real life)ā€¦

And what sweet summerā€™s night would be complete without a soft-serve cone at McDonaldā€™s?!

The day was a splashing success and lives on in our memories to buoy up the ones where you wake with a stiff neck, devoid of enthusiasm even for having funā€¦(like today?)Ā  Thanks for joining me for this re-lived memory of last weekā€™s adventures.

Farewell to Summer

Summer has gone out with a splendid spurt of genuinely hot weatherā€”well, not exactly Arizona hot butā€¦ we did try to swim every day we could, despite the shiver of ocean and lake this year.Ā  The grand finale for me was a fine day with friends over on Texada, an island easily reached from Powell River by a 35 min. ferry.Ā  Our prayer walk was commenced and terminated with swims.Ā  First in the prime swimming holeā€¦

NO, not this one.Ā  Scā€¦scā€¦scary!Ā  An abandoned quarryā€¦(donā€™t jump!)
P1030532
Ahhā€¦ thatā€™s betterā€¦easy in, easy out and wonderful swimming in between.Ā  Being before noon, we had the place to ourselves for a leisurely swimā€¦
P1030541ā€¦followed by a prayerful meander through ā€˜townā€™, committing this island and its occupants to God as best we knew how.
Our day concluded with a gourmet luncheon prepared by a local summer resident (Thanks Naomi!!!) and a brave plunge in the ocean just to say weā€™d done it.Ā  BRRR and shiver!
That was on the weekend.Ā  This morning I woke to the sound of gentle rain, the swish of a car on the wet road, the silver-gray of fall begunā€¦
By afternoon the sky had brightened and I made an exercise ā€˜runā€™ (not) up Scout.

The rains are definitely comingā€¦
P1030577
The silver cloud cover seems to mute all sound. A damp cool silence has replaced summerā€™s buzzā€¦As I descend, a lone raven calls across the treetops.Ā  Another echoes back with an uncanny voice only a raven could musterā€¦ Bear droppings further down the mountain are filled with Blackberry seeds. Itā€™s been a bumper crop year!
Itā€™s no longer silent. Iā€™ve roused a squirrel in passing and his high-strung chitter of warning refuses to be silenced.
Summerā€™s passing is a bittersweet thing.Ā  For the plant kingdom fall is their crowning event.Ā  Theyā€™ve fulfilled the seasonā€™s missionā€”to grow and bloom and multiply themselves.

May we be so carefreeā€”glad of a seasonā€™s fruitfulness.
Full of the memories,
