Good to the last drop!

Intent on savoring the lingering loveliness of summer’s blue skies, we’ve been out and about this week…Hiked up Scout twice.  Didn’t bother taking the camera along. Rats!  Because it was the coming down that proved interesting!  As we emerged out of the dense trees onto the green soccer field at the base of the mountain I thought I heard a  sort of grunting sound followed by a raspy scrabbling effect…

And then there they were within a dozen yards—Mama Bear, and three cuddly toddlers, one of whom was up the fork of a fir tree very near us.  Just loitering in the park,  startled by our appearance, as much as we were by theirs!  But alas, I was without my camera.  sigh.  I retreated only reluctantly.  And from a more distant vantage point realized there was another Mama and her twins dawdling at the lawn’s edge not far beyond the ones we’d startled.  Hmm… fine day for a (teddy) bear picnic I guess!

P1080317 Yesterday we got out with friends to discover the Stillwater Bluffs people here rave about—great rock slabs covered in dry moss and lichen, adorned with arbutus and gnarly old firs towering above the oceans’ glinting expanse…

P1080319 The cacophony of sea lion babble on a nearby islet wafted over, a humorously accurate but muted imitation of a dirtbike rally!

After a thorough bit of basking in the heat atop the bluff we headed down to tuck our toes in the still waters of a tidal pool

seaside spa and introduce ourselves to the locals.  Meet Hermie.

Chasing Bumblebees…

Just in from chasing bumblebees in the garden… a fine pastime for a sunny spring day, while the sun plays peek-a-boo with encroaching clouds–some fluffy white, some frowning gray…

The eider down of dandelions-past-their-prime, now reseeding for future generations, is upstaged by the glow of buttercup faces…But the real draw is the overwintered kale now gone to seed, the garden’s first brightness in spring.

P1060637

The peas are peeking out; potatoes are eyeing sunshine from their dark furrows. The comfrey’s come back with all the power of a mighty weed.

How did I think I would let this season go, for a change, and not do any gardening? Sheer nonsense. I can’t keep myself out of the beds—searching for emerging seedlings, planted and otherwise…on the lookout for new life, excited by the growth that comes once my precious seeds are committed to the dead earth…

P1060613

It’s hard to let them go. What if they don’t germinate and grow?  All will be lost. There’s no instant manufacturing of more seed, only a long season of growth and fruitfulness and maturity.  And then the gathering and the storing and the patient waiting for spring. Once in the seed packets, nicely labeled, the seed is mine—holding all the potential of  a flourishing garden of veggies and blooms.  But it ‘abides alone’, useless really, (no matter how lovely the packaging), if I fail to take the plunge and commit my precious seeds to the ground….

P1060642

The painful part is passing now.  Most of my seeds are planted and hopeful I ramble through the yard bending to see the first shoots, and finding the rewards here and there and the springing hope of summer’s bounty and autumn’s harvest…Yes, it’s a fine day for chasing bumblebees in the garden…

And so glad I am for the plants that reliably spring out of hibernation every spring, mature and  ready to bloom where they’ve been planted in bygone years… They brighten my hopes for the rest yet to come!

Blooming Beauties

P1060404

We took a jaunt up to ‘our’ best loved islands one sunny afternoon this week…

P1060470

The slopes are abloom with ‘lemon chiffon’ flowers…

But we weren’t the only pair enjoying a get-away….

Meet the Mergansers, diving fresh-water fish ducks trying out the salt-water chuck, just back from wintering in Mexico…

Mr. Merganser…                                       and the Missus taking a look back at us…

What a hair-do she sports eh?!

And in our ramblings we were secretively surveilled by this SKINK until Jim noticed him and called me back to see what I had walked right past….

P1060454skink

Then it was our turn to do the staring.  He refused to give us the time of day, just stood (yes, he has feet) motionless hoping we really didn’t see him as we got closer and closer with the camera lens… till we were only a couple inches from his face—then he relinquished his spot in the sun and slinked off…

P1060455headshot

I did a little reading up on this fellow later.  Glad not to have tried picking him up.  Apparently young skinks do bite and then they drop their BLUE tails to squiggle and squirm while they run for cover!  The tails grow back but usually not blue…thus this stoic camouflaged fellow—older and wiser.

But back to the blooming beauties of the place…

…a trailing blackberry(?) gets its start on a rocky ledge…
