Celebrating Winter

I read lately of three keys to enduring a long winter.  But first and foremost is the attitude shift from enduring to celebrating!  At least that’s what the PhD student who conducted a mental health study in Norway had to say. Mind you, she only spent one winter there… But the keys she found are ones we are implementing here as we gear up to enjoy winter.

#1 The Opportunity!

One key to enjoying winter is to celebrate the things one can only do in winter, for instance—skiing!

I was sad to see autumn losing ground to winter and the last of the bright leaves tumbling down to be buried in white.  But Jim was chomping at the bit to get out cross-country skiing.  This is new to us.  We bought some skis just as the snow wrapped up last year so didn’t get much of a start. But we took our skis along on our recent trip to Alberta and…found some snow.

I’m the chicken, who has great reservations about new and untried things.  Jim is so good for me.  We had a good time, and I didn’t even break anything!  Though I had a good chuckle at Jim’s videos of me shuffling along like a little old lady—when I in fact pictured myself g-l-i-d-i-n-g along quite proficiently.  NOT.

Watch for the old lady…

Another thing to celebrate is the coziness of wintertime—candles, fuzzy blankets, fires and hot drinks. And of course, though the article made little mention of it, Christmas time! With its music and sparkle and the smell of gingerbread cooking…and special together times.  What would winter be without Christmas?

#3 The Beauty

And then there is the sheer beauty of the season.  Apparently, in the dead of winter in Norway there are hours of sunrise and sunset without the sun ever really appearing.  As for me, I prefer to see the sun.  Yesterday while the first major snow of the season was falling here the sun was shrouded in white.

But today the sun was radiant, pouring in at the window making all seem right in the world, despite my being a little under the weather with the sickness now nicely incubated from our recent trip to visit little people…

The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. … I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. … I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. … This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Ps.118:14,17,24

Oh, what fun!

I haven’t seen these since I was a kid traipsing to the candy store with my friends on lunch break…

I found it in Banff of all places, along with Necco’s to share with the grandkids…

These great American classics are hard to find in the cold white north!

(But enough of trivia.)

Oh what fun we had on our latest trip to visit these energetic upstarts!IMG_20150213_103942945IMG_20150213_100059648IMG_20150213_115814369IMG_20150213_111905152IMG_20150217_173023728

And at the last we were accepted by the newest one too…IMG_20150213_143246772IMG_20150213_143434295_HDR

Then it was time to go, and oh the early morning tears… (Even five-year-olds are touched with the grief of good-byes…won’t heaven be something!)

We made a day of the drive ‘home’ and stopped to ski and then to soak in hot springs…. now that’s the way to do a trip!  When we were young, and when our own kids were young (sorry kids), a trip was a thing to get over with as fast as possible.  Only quick pit stops were allowed.

Now that we are getting old, we pause more often to take in our surroundings.  What a treasure God has given in the beauty of Creation! Have you ever stopped to wonder what it would be like if all the world were flat?

Though snow is sparse this year, we found  trails with man-made snow and had a go of it.  We are absolute newbies at Cross-country but eager to learn ( :
(Now, to keep up with Jim!)

And what an incredible backdrop we had!

This is my Father’s world and to my listening ears all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres!

Fresh, White, and Slippery!

IMG_20150204_112235753_HDRI haven’t been on a pair of skis in 30 years!  And on that first (and only) other occasion I fell and broke my ski pole just minutes out of the rental shack.  I remember little else about the event, other than being terrified of the hills!  So it was with some trepidation that I rented a pair of skis yesterday and hit the trails with Jim…

After two hours we quit for lunch, but we’re hooked… We were back to watch the evening fall and the night course light up…

When in snow country, do what the snow country people do!  And now we’re in no rush for spring to come.  We have to learn to ski first!

Defying forecasts of rain, a hush of snow was falling as we woke this morning……P1160983
