Over in the meadow…

[Whoops! Please pardon my lapse in posting.  It’s not that I haven’t been getting out…]

And in fact I have taken a few pictures. How could I not?!   That crisp glory of fall is upon us,

and with it the first frosting of snow has fallen in the mountains round about…

After a stint of wet & cold, the sun came back to play.  I love the way it makes the trees seem to glow!

P1220293P1220191

The weather has been splendiferous!

P1220135P1220099

So we had the kids out for a visit and took them to one of my favorite places, what I call ‘the meadow’.

P1220097P1220115

It lies on the bike trail between home and town—a well-disguised cover-up of the mining operations upon which Canmore was founded.  Here the men came day by day to the lantern house to fetch their lights and descend into the gloom…

P1220120P1220119

Now we stroll along, or more often pedal along, and revel in the beauty of God’s earth…

These mountains are not just lovely they are also full of treasure. The range we see out our window is made almost entirely of Limestone—a boon for the cement industry. So… we went for a BBQ and  tour at the Exshaw plant just down the highway… Ya’ gotta love the centerpieces on all the tables:IMG_20160917_132505624_HDR

These are ‘clinkers’—the result of baking a crushed combination of rock (mostly limestone) at temperatures a third the heat of the sun!  Now you just take these clinkers, add some gypsum and grind ‘em to powder and you’ve got cement!

It’s a big operation,

IMG_20160917_131515712_HDR

but looks pretty cushy from inside this cab…

IMG_20160917_131132399_HDR

Well… we’re bracing for winter, so we did a little mountain biking at the local Nordic Ski center to familiarize ourselves with the trails…P1220175This’ll all be snow in another month…

And say, here’s evidence that I actually do know how to ride a bike all by myself:

IMG_20160915_123345903

We went exploring off-road on Jim’s day off and IMG_20160915_114258062discovered the Trans-Canada trail…

We didn’t go too far but we had a lovely time bumping along…

P1220246P1220253

After refueling with a snack we rode along this canal that generates power by diverting water…Nevermind the technical stuff.  I thought the water was lovely ( :

P1220277

But the rocky ROUGHness of this path was a bit much!

P1220238

Meanwhile, back at home, our front yard was transformed into a CycleCross course for a race on the weekend. P1220364P1220351

That was more excitement out the window than I’m used to!

But today the quiet has been restored, and with it the regular rounds of a stealthy coyote…

P1220094  After he had passed today along came what I’m thinking was a fox, stalking and pouncing in the tall grass.  Sweet.

And always when one needs to think, or to suspend thinking,  there are my favorite trees to gaze at, now dressed up to welcome autumn…

P1220370

Lovely.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

The Dancing Days…

IMG_20151026_111851223_HDRJust outside my window, reaching an arm to frame my view, stands a young oak tree.  He has taken the place of the grand willow  left behind in Powell River.

Instead of willow boughs swinging sinuously in the breeze, now curled brown leaves fall translucent with autumn sun. leaves falling

Only they don’t just ’fall’. They dance their way to the ground swooping and twirling—one last fling before winter.  In so doing they catch my eye and are a great distraction from sitting at my computer trying to string words together…

So I succumbed to their charm and composed a haiku to celebrate.IMG_20151026_205201118

Curled leaves sashay down

Glowing gold though life is spent

Transfigured in death.

And since one verse couldn’t quite capture their grace, I wrote another:

Riding morning breeze

Oak leaves swirl dancing carefree

I watch in envy

And another.

Flurry of oak leaves

Fly wild outside my window

How can I sit still?

But when I did go out  in hopes of capturing their  image in flight I was surprised and sidetracked by a ‘rafter’ of turkeys [yes, that’s the technical word for a group of them; and now we’ve both learned something new!] happening by…

(They’re definitely not as good looking as eating— American Thanksgiving here we come!)

Alas, the leaves are mostly fallen now,

And blown away besides–thanks to the cyclonic winds of our new leaf blower that has no sense of the beauty of fallen leaves, P1190029P1190034only of tidy walkways…

The rains have returned after an exceptionally dry summer

The dancing days are done.  It’s time…

Well, almost time. Maybe I can wait a little longer…

till the turkeys have stopped meandering about and have been eaten,

till the trees have all put away their fall color…IMG_20151030_155016195

and till I’ve dug out some candles to brighten a darkening world in their stead.

For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness.  Ps.18:28

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jn.8:12

While the earth remains,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night,
shall not cease.

Wonder tree!

Towering PineIMG_20150825_163950572[1]

A wonder tree!  She may not be in an ideal location, considering her 125 year old ‘twin’ that came down in a wind storm earlier this summer–and has now been rendered into rounds for splitting to keep the house warm!–

P1170903P1180058P1180062P1180317

But she’s a wonder when it comes to long pine needles.  Hers are nearly a foot long! This is an ideal length for learning the art of pine needle basket making!

And that’s what I’ve been up to this week!

Oh, there was a hike too—a re-run to the Smallwood overlook to introduce Jim to the view.  This could become our new ‘Scout’ Mountain hike; it’s the closest to home.

It wasn’t raining this time.  The panoramic views were pretty spectacular, other than the smoke!P1180310P1180290P1180305

Forest fires to the South are keeping the lid on our sunshine these days.
